Embarking on a day as a Design Technology teacher feels like diving into a captivating adventure, where each student’s imagination serves as my guiding compass. From crafting prototypes to navigating challenges, it’s a whirlwind of creativity and discovery. Watching through the glass doors from the outside it appears to be chaos and cacophony but inside there is constant rumination, manipulation with materials, and a lot of staring into oblivion in the middle of creating something.

Picture this: students engaged in discussions, eyes gleaming with curiosity as they brainstorm ideas, experiment with materials, and unveil their inner inventors. Daily, we embark on the twists and turns of the design process, fueled by a shared love for exploration and hands-on learning.

Amidst the joyful chaos of experimentation, every “Eureka!” moment reaffirms the boundless potential of young minds. Whether it’s overcoming the challenge of stabilizing a skewer passing through a cardboard hole or ingeniously adding glue drops to straighten out a pulley bucket made of paper cups, these moments of triumph are the heartbeat of our classroom.

Like any great adventure, there were hurdles to overcome. Balancing my personal life with professional commitments had often felt like striving for synchronicity in a world where work-life balance is more of a rhythm than a static equilibrium. Yet, within these challenges lies the essence of the journey.

As educators, we understand the importance of nurturing curiosity and creativity, especially in a world where children are constantly surrounded by technology and over-stimulated. If you have ever held a torch for your dad/mom while they seemingly try to fix something (like most 80s kids have) then you have entered the world of creating and making. We must encourage tinkering and hands-on exploration to foster innovation and problem-solving skills in our students.

I’m filled with anticipation for all that lies ahead. In this ever-changing landscape of education, one thing remains constant: the need to grow and learn alongside our students.
